Sunset Triangle Plaza

Updated – Economic Impact Analysis Preliminary Findings

Robin Abad Ocubillo and the Parklet Studies Team looked at the economic impact of the Sunset Triangle Plaza starting in April 2012, after it had been open for one month. They interviewed the local business community at regular intervals over the next six months, and this preliminary report documents merchants’ perceptions of how the plaza impacts local life and business. The conclusion so far is that in addition to providing much needed public space, the project has been beneficial to the neighborhood’s economy.

Description from Project Debut in March 2012

Although Sunset Triangle Plaza draws its inspiration from the successful pedestrian plazas created with a painted street surface, potted plants and moveable tables and chairs in New York and San Francisco, the original concept of a pedestrian plaza in Silver Lake was developed by community members in 2006.

Designed by renowned architecture firm Rios Clemente Hale Studios, Sunset Triangle Plaza will be located on Griffith Park Blvd between Edgecliffe Drive and Maltman Avenue and will be temporary closed to automobile traffic for the approximately one year duration of the pilot project. Cars will continue to be able to use Edgecliffe Drive to travel around the plaza.

At Sunset Triangle Plaza, the twice-weekly farmer’s market will continue to operate uninterrupted, additional parking spaces will be created along Sunset Boulevard to accommodate for some of those lost, and all street furniture will be brought inside each evening to maintain its quality and cleanliness.

There has been increased demand in Los Angeles for safer and more welcoming streets for residents to play, walk, run, bicycle and rest.  Sunset Triangle Plaza offers a destination for people of all ages, backgrounds and physical abilities to sit and relax, visit local business or engage with members of your community in a vibrant public space.

Come celebrate the opening of Los Angeles’ pilot pedestrian plaza! Bring your family, friends and neighbors to join local businesses, community groups, city officials, and residents in a fun-filled celebration!
